Technical Shipping Carrier Updates: What’s Changing Next

Written by Michael Miller | Sep 29, 2025 9:44:27 PM

Our shipping carriers (FedEx, USPS, DHL, UPS) are rolling out important updates to their systems and services over the coming year. These changes may affect pricing, customs requirements, and how shipments are tracked.

I’ve summarized recent changes already live and what’s still ahead, including important notes about our own platform (REMs/Webship).

Recent Changes (Now in Effect)

  • UPS (June 2024): Old “Access Key” login is gone. All integrations now use OAuth 2.0 tokens.

  • USPS (July 2025): Service standards refined — more shipments fall into 2-, 3-, or 4-day ranges.

  • USPS (August 2025): Key APIs (labels, pricing, addresses) have moved to cloud infrastructure.

  • DHL (August 22, 2025): Business parcels to the U.S. via postal routes suspended due to new U.S. customs rules.

What’s Ahead (Confirmed + Expected)

  • USPS – Jan 25, 2026: Full retirement of Web Tools APIs. Everyone must use the new developer portal.

  • FedEx – June 2026: SOAP/XML APIs officially retired. All integrations must migrate to REST/GraphQL.

  • REMs/Webship – FedEx REST API Upgrade (by Feb 2026):

    • Transition will begin in February 2026.

    • Customers and industries will be migrated gradually.

    • Partner Action Required: Once we start moving accounts, Tech Support will create transition tickets for each Partner. These tickets will outline the specific information required from your customers to complete the migration.

  • 2026–2027 (Expected Across Carriers):

    • More dynamic surcharges (seasonal & congestion-based).

    • Stricter customs requirements (complete HS codes, payer details, etc.).

    • Richer tracking updates with predictive ETAs.

    • Tighter security: More OAuth, stricter TLS requirements.
